Why We Love Christmas In The Cayman Islands

Holidays |

It may be a cliché, but it’s also true that Christmas is the most magical time of the year in the Cayman Islands. Caymanians embrace the festive season with unbridled enthusiasm and the holiday calendar is brimming with colorful and spirited events.

The festivities begin as early as November, so even if one visits before the holiday season officially begins, there is no shortage of seasonal events and Christmas cheer to get you into the spirit of the holidays.

Some of the Cayman Christmas holiday events that we love so much include:

The Annual Christmas Tree Lighting

Many festivities take place in and around the charming development of Camana Bay, and the annual Christmas tree lighting took place last Saturday 18th November and marks the unofficial start of the holiday season.

When the switch is flipped, thousands of twinkling lights illuminate the town center, artificial snow falls gently in the warm air, a 40 foot Christmas tree dazzles at the end of the Paseo and fireworks light up the sky. Choir performances, Santa sightings and craft stalls all add up to a delightful evening out. It really is a wonderful start to the holidays and this year was no exception!

Strolling Through Christmas Gardens

Grand Cayman truly lights up at Christmas. Various large-scale private homes decorate their front yards with a mind-blowing array of lights.  Some leave their gates open for the public to wander in and marvel at the magnificent displays.

Take a tour along South Sound road to see the most impressive of these or, if you don’t have a car, join one of the Christmas Lights tours operated by the National Trust of the Cayman Islands.

It’s the perfect post-dinner stroll with the family!

Christmas Movies, Live Music and Theatre

Each December the island hosts several of the best in musical talent. Be it a live cello concerto, this year featuring the young talent that is  Sheku Kanneh-Mason and his pianist sister, Isata Kanneh-Mason. Or be it the Capella Music Festival – a two day live music festival with performances by renowned musicians such as headliner Beres Hammond and includes a festival village with local vendors and local acts providing the opening entertainment.

For the kiddies there is also Camana Bay’s popular Moonlight & Movies series returns at Christmas time with screenings of classic Christmas movies under the stars including The Nutcracker, Peter Pan and Follies. The Prospect Playhouse Theatre also perform for the children as part of the Cayman Islands Drama Society’s Christmas series running throughout December.

Christmas Brunch

For those who prefer not to slave over a hot stove during the holidays or even on Christmas Day itself, many restaurants and hotels put on either lavish brunch buffets or set Christmas menus, after which one can spill out on to the beach for a Christmas swim.

You can enjoy a full breakfast, then fresh lobster and seafood, Christmas turkey, beef, ham, chicken, pasta, all the desserts, cheeses and all the champagne you can drink.

The beauty is there’s no mess to tidy up!

Dashing Through The Sand Run

For the more energetic amongst us, there’s a chance to run off all your Christmas feasting at the Dashing Through The Sand run.

This 1.5 mile light-hearted run or walk along Seven Mile Beach takes place annually on Boxing Day, and is a great chance to work off some of the excesses of the day before, before breakfast and an early morning swim.

But be warned, running in the sand is hard work!

New Year's Eve On The Beach

There is no shortage of ways to see the old year out in Grand Cayman.

From elegant ticketed events at resorts to DJs and dancing on the beach, and numerous fireworks displays to usher in the New Year, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

You just can’t beat spending NYE outdoors, under the stars with your toes in the sand!
