Celebrate in Style: Spend Your Family Thanksgiving in the Cayman Islands

Travel Tips |

Thanksgiving is a uniquely North American holiday often observed with family, football, time-honored recipes and cherished traditions. It can also be one of the busiest and most overwhelming weekends of the year. With the frazzling logistics of cooking for a crowd and dealing with notorious travel delays, the Thanksgiving holiday can leave you exhausted and missing out on precious family time.

Why not trade in the holiday headaches for a dose of Cayman sunshine and hospitality? Pack your bags—and your appetite for adventure—and bring the family together to share the joy of Thanksgiving in a carefree, tropical setting. Whether you’re traveling in a party of two or with relatives in tow, a Thanksgiving in the Cayman Islands is guaranteed to serve up a stress-free family holiday.

Travel to the Cayman Islands for a November to remember

November can be an ideal time to travel to Grand Cayman. Not only can the whole family enjoy a getaway without sacrificing many vacation or school days, but autumn also brings gorgeous weather and crystal-clear waters. And, a Thanksgiving holiday in the Cayman Islands doesn’t come at a premium price. With the majority of travelers staying stateside for the holiday weekend, you can expect cheaper international airfares and budget-friendly deals.

In addition to our annual November festivities, there are plenty of events and activities to enjoy!

  • Camana Bay’s Annual Christmas Tree Lighting— On November 16, Camana Bay transforms into a winter wonderland with a towering, twinkling Christmas tree, carol singing, a Christmas market and a visit from Santa.
  • Meals on Wheels Turkey Trot— Gather your gang on November 30 for the annual Turkey Trot, a 5k and 10k walk/run to raise funds to end senior hunger in the Cayman Islands. Costumes are encouraged!
  • Christmas Movie Nights— Every Tuesday evening throughout December, families are invited to pack a picnic and enjoy Christmas-themed movies in Camana Bay.
  • Gimistory— Gimistory is an international storytelling festival that brings together professional storytellers from Cayman, the Caribbean and North America. From November 29 until December 7, listen to rousing legends, myths and stories that highlight heritage and history.
  • Parade of Lights— A fleet of boats, each decorated with vivid lights and tropical pizzazz, lights up the harbour during this spectacular island tradition.

Family fun for your Grand Cayman Thanksgiving

Whether you’re keen for water sports or a private in-villa massage, Cayman obliges everyone from baby boomer parents to toddlers.

  • Scuba diving— Check a few world-renowned dive sites off your list. Popular spots include Eden Rock and Devil’s Grotto, featuring amazing labyrinths filled with parrotfish and barracuda, and the USS Kittiwake, a submerged submarine and artificial reef with swim throughs and myriad sea life.
  • Hiking— Late fall offers pleasant conditions for hiking around Grand Cayman. Visit Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Garden or head to the Mastic Trail, a 200-year-old path that shows off the island’s colorful and rare plant life.
  • Birdwatching— The islands host an interesting mix of endemic and resident species. You might spy the White-tailed Tropicbird off Pedro Bluff, the Brown Pelican on Seven Mile Beach and a variety of water-loving birds at Barkers National Park.
  • Explore the food scene— You’ll be spoiled for choice with Grand Cayman’s selection of gourmet and casual establishments that offer fresh seafood, Caribbean fare and ethnic cuisine prepared with an island twist. The Rum Cakes at Tortuga Rum Company are truly mouthwatering and the island’s tastiest fish fry can be found at Grape Tree Cafe, a charming local spot with a prime oceanside setting. Craft beer enthusiasts may enjoy a visit to Cayman Islands Brewery (CIB) to sample an award-winning variety of brews, including Pirates Gold Lager, which debuted during the 2012 Pirates Week festivities.
