Frontline Hero Honored with Luxury Vacation

COVID-19 |

In June of last year, following the first unsettling months of the pandemic, Luxury Cayman Villas spearheaded an initiative to honor those who had been on the frontline in the fight against the pandemic. After months of lockdown, during which so many essential workers had put their own health at risk to keep their community safe, the luxury villa rental company wanted to show its appreciation for these local heroes.

The Honor Frontline Heroes Giveaway invited residents to nominate individuals they felt deserved recognition for their commitment, compassion and selflessness in dealing with COVID-19.

Those nominating local heroes were asked to describe, in 200 words or less, why their nominee should be chosen. One name – Janelle Lombard – appeared time and again, with entries describing the pediatric nurse’s dedication to putting others first and going above and beyond the call of duty.

Janelle was informed in November 2020 that she had won the grand prize: a luxury vacation package. The prize included accommodation courtesy of Luxury Cayman Villas plus a variety of extras donated by local businesses.

The full package included a five-night stay at Evolution, a luxury 7-bedroom oceanfront villa in Bodden Town; a full-day private charter with Family Time Watersports and a credit to dine at Kaibo; a catered dinner courtesy of Chef Carlos Bolanos; pre-stocked groceries sponsored by Property Cayman; a one-hour massage by Perfectly Pampered; fine wines and spirits provided by Tortuga and a welcome gift basket from Celebrations Weddings & Events.

When asked how she felt about being selected, Janelle said she was, “Absolutely speechless. Overwhelmed and humbled because I know there are so many other equally deserving frontline workers. I am grateful to my friends and family who took the time to nominate me. I feel loved beyond measure.”

In April 2020, at the height of lockdown, Janelle volunteered to move from the paediatric ward to the paediatric COVID-19/flu clinic. In addition to taking swabs and attending to children who showed symptoms of the virus, she assisted nurses in the Respiratory Care Unit, where they cared for adults with COVID-19.

“There was no doubt in my mind I wanted to help. I did not want to watch from the sidelines, so it was a no brainer to volunteer,” Janelle recalls. Her greatest concern was not for her own wellbeing, but the risk she could potentially infect those closest to her.

Thanks to the swift, decisive action of the Cayman Islands Government, the Cayman Islands has had a very low number of COVID-19 patients requiring hospitalisation.  In Janelle’s time at the clinic, luckily, there were no paediatric patients admitted for COVID-19.
